What is the difference between removing usb from the system?

What is the difference between pulling a USB after the work is done And clicking on "safe to remove drive" option. What would be the impact on the System and on the USB (Please also specify the type of files effected), as I see no major difference in doing so apart from saving time in pulling it off instead of doing the safe to remove procedure.
Also will it effect the life of the USB?
Thx for your answers in advance.

safely remove means it shuts down all the connection coming and going to usb so there is nothing that can get damaged . its safer.
On my Vista computer I always have a green button in the task bar that says "Safely Remove Hardware" and so far I haven’t ran in to any problems removing a USB drive with zip and .odt (Open Office) files on it as long as the button was green. To pull it when the button isn’t green may result in you loosing your files so be sure it is. I don’t know what operating system you have but if it’s XP the same thing applies and I suspect the same goes for Win 7 although I’m not a hundred percent certain on that since none of my computers have it installed as of yet. If you have a non Windows OS it seems it would have a similar safety measure.
