What happens if i install more memory RAM than maximum?

I bought a laptop N81Vp-D2 ASUS and the seller told me that he installed an extra 2GB RAM. However, the maximum ram to be installed in this model is 4 GB… how would this work? will it show but not work? Let me know what you think!
