Antonio Margarito Denied License To Fight In California

Antonio Margarito Denied License To Fight In CaliforniaThe California State Athletic Commission voted 5-to-1 against giving Antonio Margarito a new license to box today, putting a scheduled November 13 fight against Manny Pacquiao into serious question. The case wasn’t a particularly complex matter, as state attorney Karen Chappelle argued that Margarito, 32, was not rehabilitated, did not show remorse, and with 18 months to familiarize himself with his case, had also failed to do that. Margarito was suspended for at least a year after an illegal, plaster-like substance was found in his hand wraps before a January 2009 bout against Shane Mosley at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Top Rank’s Bob Arum will try to convince the Texas Sate Athletic Commission to issue Margarito his boxing license after Nevada declined to sanction the bout unless California reinstate the license of the former welterweight champion from Tijuana, Mexico. Otherwise, Arum will seek to put up the match somewhere in the Middle East or find Pacquiao another credible opponent. This could affect Manny’s training schedule if Arum pushes for the November 13 fight schedule that he had already arranged with HBO.
